VIC² Code of Conduct

Riding

Before The Ride

  • Do not ride if you are ill or weakened, or if a medical professional has advised you not to ride.

  • Know how to change a tire and tube, and always carry at least one spare tube with a pump or CO2 cartridge with you.  Alternatively, ensure that someone riding with you is able and willing to fix your flat, or have a phone handy for the mercy call.

  • Keep your bicycle well maintained so it is safe and dependable.

  • If you participate in a ride without “no drop” policy, understand that you may be left behind if your bike breaks down, or you do not meet minimum fitness requirements for that ride.  Bring a call list of people you can count on to come provide assistance.

  • Review the proposed route for each ride you plan to attend to be certain the route is suitable for you - only go on rides for which you possess an appropriate level of experience, cycling skills, and safety knowledge.

  • Follow all other rules included on the Club’s website and in the Clubs’ pre-ride announcements.

Ride Day Readiness

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the published ride time, ready to roll.  Check in and organization starts at the published ride time, and rides will pull out 10 minutes after that time.

  • Do not attempt to participate in a Club ride if your membership is not current.

  • Make sure you know the basic communications and etiquette for group riding before the ride starts - you can ask the ride leader if you have any questions.

  • Follow the instructions of Club Ride Leaders, including leaving a ride if asked to do so.  They will check in the group, have non-members sign a waiver, and give pre-ride instructions.

  • All participants in VIC² riding events must wear a helmet, and preferably cycling gloves.  These will help protect you in the event you are involved in a fall.

  • Wear light, visible, bright-colored clothing in daylight. If riding in low light, use a headlight and taillight, as well as reflective material on your body.

  • If possible, consider your VIC²  jersey your go to jersey for club rides.

  • Be sure your tires are properly inflated prior to each ride.

  • Bring adequate liquids, food, clothing and money on each ride – stored in pockets or secured bike bags.

  • Bring ID, health insurance card, emergency contact information and mobile phone on each ride.

During The Ride

  • Be polite, considerate, supportive, and helpful toward other Club members and volunteers.

  • Ride predictably and communicate your intent to other riders.

  • Do not ride with headphones.

  • Obey all applicable traffic, safety and cycling laws.

  • Riding on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic, is the law.

  • Obey all traffic signs, signals, and other traffic devices.  Come to a full stop at stop signs and red lights.

  • Yield to other vehicles and pedestrians when traffic law requires you to do so.

  • Look behind you before turning or changing lanes, yielding to overtaking traffic, and signaling before turning or changing lanes.

  • Maintain a safe following distance from other cyclists at all times depending on the conditions, but never closer than 1 foot for every 1 mph over 10 mph (e.g. 5’ minimum at 15 mph and 10’ minimum at 20 mph).  Peloton style drafting should only be adopted if you are experienced enough to know you will maintain your safety, and the safety of the other riders.

  • Ride single file, unless the law, traffic conditions, and safety considerations allow you to ride two abreast.

  • Always move completely off the road when stopped.

  • Carry your waste/litter to proper disposal containers.

  • Give your full attention to traffic and the road surface. Beware of such road hazards as rocks, potholes, gravel, animals, etc..  Warn other riders of hazards and other dangers using accepted verbal warnings and hand signals.

  • If unforeseen circumstances cause you to leave a group ride, notify one of the Ride Leaders.

  • Should there be an encounter with an auto driver, if possible record the encounter with your phone.  Do not escalate the situation – introduce yourself, apologize if appropriate, state your position calmly, and end encounter quickly.

After The Ride

  • Continue drinking fluids, and eating lean carbs and proteins.

  • Clean/wipe down bike and lube chain.

  • Replace any used tubes and/or CO2 cartridges.

  • If you noticed any bike issues, make a note to correct before your next ride.

  • Enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow Club riders!
