Purpose

The health, vitality, and sustainability of our community is important to us. We provide our members the opportunity to provide their support both financially and with hands-on help. The club chooses one or more charity partners each year. In addition, we have adopted a road in Douglas County and coordinate trash pick-up events on our road segment each year.

Backpack Society

Backpack Society is a community-supported non-profit organization that collects food donations and funds for students who are struggling with food insecurity. They partner with Douglas County and Littleton Public School District to provide food to kids on weekends and on breaks when they don't have access to it at school.

As part of our ongoing effort to provide community support, a portion of every member’s registration is directed to the Backpack Society. Through the years, the club has directed over $30,000 in donations to local non-profits in this way.

Members may also volunteer individually or as a group to help with organizing and packing food bags and weekend boxes for school children and their families.

HopeCycle

HopeCycle is a local non-profit whose mission is to inspire hope for those in need through the gift of a bicycle. They repair and repurpose used bicycles, turning them into “good as new” bikes for needy individuals.

Each year, our club sponsors a used bike drive for HopeCycle. The number of bikes collected each year varies, with the record being 80 bikes at a single event.

Adopt-a-Road

Village Idiots owns the road! Well, technically we have the responsibility to help keep clean one of the many great stretches we have available to us for riding. We hold a couple of group cleanup days for club members to participate in each year.

Our adopted "baby" is the one-mile stretch of South Havana between Castle Pines Parkway north to Oak Hill Lane (the I-25 underpass road) across from the Surrey Ridge dog park.

We are fortunate to have great riding routes in our area and want to do our part to keep them beautiful!

Sustainability Statement

The Village Idiots Cycling Club is committed to promoting sustainability through our actions and initiatives.  As avid cyclists, we recognize the importance of preserving our environment and fostering a community that cares for the world we ride through.

Through our participation in the Douglas County Adopt-a-Road program, we actively contribute to keeping our local environment clean. Our clean-up days on South Havana Street near Castle Rock not only enhance the aesthetics of the area but also demonstrate our commitment to a cleaner, healthier community by collecting discarded plastics that could end up in our waterways or groundwater.

Our annual used bike drive for HopeCycle contributes to sustainable transportation by giving new life to pre-owned bicycles.  By collecting and donating used bicycles, we support a local non-profit in repairing and repurposing bikes, providing sustainable and affordable transportation options for needy children and reducing the amount of materials sent to landfills.

We embrace a variety of ride types, including those on open roads, gravel, and paved bike paths. This diversity not only accommodates cyclists of all abilities but also promotes a connection with nature and environmentally friendly modes of transportation and recreation.

We are committed to minimizing single-use plastics such as water bottles, plates, and cutlery for our social events.  When we need to drive to the start point of a ride we carpool whenever it is practical.

As we roll into the future, The Village Idiots Cycling Club remains dedicated to supporting sustainable practices, fostering a sense of responsibility towards our environment, and inspiring others to join us in creating a greener, more sustainable world.
